MadiSUN Solar Program

MadiSUN is a program sponsored by the City of Madison to make going solar easy and affordable.  This is the last year to take advantage of a full 30% Federal Tax Credit, which makes 2019 a great time to explore solar.  Since 2016, the MadiSUN Solar Program has helped homeowners across the area install solar-electric systems on their homes. Over 100 households have “gone solar” thanks to the program’s simplicity, reduced price, and customer service.  MadiSUN also offers incentives for business, nonprofits, and affordable housing providers.  Check out madisunsolar.com to learn more about how to go solar.

TV Donation Opportunity – Fitchburg Senior Center

If you are upgrading your TV and your old one (less than seven years old) needs a new home, consider donating it to the Fitchburg Senior Center.  The goal is to give seniors who are unable to capture an over-the-air digital picture with their old TV the chance to enjoy a crisp, clear picture.  Contact David at 270-4292.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

If you skip certain vaccines, you have plenty of company.  And vaccinations are not just for kis.  Research shows that many older adults aren’t getting the protection they need. About 30% of people 65 and older skipped their flu shot last year, about 67% didn’t receive the recommended shingles vaccine, and 43% aren’t up to date on tetanus shots, according to a 2017 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Often Medicare will *not* cover certain vaccines (e.g., for shingles, and Tdap – tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis) given in a Doctor’s office, but *will* cover the vaccine, with a small copay (usually $5-$10) at a local pharmacy, such as Walgreens or CVS.

ADRC Free Memory Screening

Thr., Aug. 15 10:30am-1:30pm, Meadowridge Library

Keep losing your keys? Forget why you walked into a room? For anyone who might be thinking their memory isn’t quite what it used to be, the Aging and Disability Resource Center is currently offering a Free Memory Screening. The free, confidential memory screening is aimed at promoting early detection of memory problems and appropriate intervention.

While a memory screening is not the same as a memory evaluation, it can be a helpful test. If someone is experiencing minor memory problems, early evaluation is important. Some memory problems, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems can be quickly and easily treated. Others, such as mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease can benefit from early diagnosis and treatment.

The Memory Screen consists of questions and tasks designed to screen for memory, language skills and thinking abilities. The person who administers the screening will review the results with the person being screened, and suggest whether the person should follow up with a physician or other qualified healthcare professional for more extensive testing.

To register for this event, please call 512-0000 ext. 2000 to sign up for your twenty minute screening.

News resources

Much of the material for our newsletters is located in resources that are regularly available online, but our editors may not focus on items that you care about.  We used to list several, but that has begun to trigger an anti-spam response on some email servers, so now we list one or two each week.
